Predicting the Winner for Every NFL Award

On Saturday night, the annual NFL Awards Show will take place. Here are the people that should take home each trophy.

MVP: Patrick Mahomes:

Mahomes just had one of the best seasons for a quarterback ever. Throwing for 50 touchdowns and 5,000 yards is insane, but it’s even crazier that this was his first season as a starter. He completely transformed a Chiefs team that felt stuck to the best offense in the league. Mahomes is arguably the best quarterback in the NFL, and he will win the MVP.

Offensive Player of the Year: Drew Brees

Mahomes could very well win this award as well, but for the sake of different players, I’m going with Brees. In November, the Saints looked unstoppable, and they were on offense. Brees threw for 32 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions in the regular season and led the Saints to a 13-3 record. He also broke the all-time passing yards record on Monday Night Football, on a 62-yard bomb in a blowout win. Brees will win as more of a consolation prize than anything.

Defensive Player of the Year: Aaron Donald

It is unprecedented for a defensive tackle to get 20.5 sacks in one season. Donald is practically unstoppable. He had over 100 quarterback pressures, and only one other player with 75 was Fletcher Cox. He is worth every dollar of his 6 years $135M contract. The 2nd best defensive player is Khalil Mack, who helped transform the Bears into a playoff team. However, Donald is going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer at this rate. This will be his 2nd straight year winning this award.

Coach of the Year: Bill Belichick

You could argue that Belichick deserves this award every year, and you’d have a good point. Every season, Belichick at least gets this team to the AFC Championship. Every season, New England wins at least 11 games. This year, the Pats were without Julian Edelman for the first 4 games, they lost Josh Gordon, Gronk has significantly declined, but it hasn´t mattered. He guided the team that everybody said had no chance to the Super Bowl. Belichick will not win Coach of the Year, it will go to a new guy like Frank Reich or Matt Nagy. Both are great coaches, but neither compares to Belichick. It is a crime that Belichick has only won the award 3 times in his career.

Comeback Player of the Year: Andrew Luck

After missing all of 2017 with a shoulder injury, Luck returned to playing great football. His 39 touchdowns were 2nd in the league and he led his team to the 2nd round of the playoffs. He came back from his injury as a better player than he was before the injury. The runner up will probably be J.J Watt, but Luck is a lock to win this.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: Baker Mayfield

This one is a tossup, as I think it should go to Mayfield, but it could go to Saquon Barkley. Barkley recorded a 2,000-yard campaign, and he will be a superstar. However, Mayfield completely transformed Cleveland’s future, giving them hope after just 1 win in 2 seasons. The Browns played inspired under Mayfield, and he plays with the confidence that you need from a quarterback. Mayfield is the face of Cleveland sports after Lebron left for LA. He deserves this.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Darius Leonard

It’s a race between Leonard and Derwin James, the safety for the Chargers. The Colts got a huge steal when they picked Leonard in the 2nd round, as he recorded 163 tackles (1st in the NFL) and 7 sacks in his rookie year. He was one of the main pieces that transformed Indianapolis from a joke into a contender. Leonard is already as good as Luke Kuechly, and at this rate, he will be in the Hall of Fame.
